St George's Terrace 1941

We probably own one of the largest photographic archives of Canterbury in the world. What is more, we have striven to collect and collate the rarer, more unusual shots, as opposed to the usual, populist views of the Cathedral and Westgate, magnificent as they are!  This means that we hold many pictures of buildings since demolished (lost to both the blitz and so-called progress), including many working class streets and dwellings that many collections do not include. The archive begins in the 1870s, and comes right up to date to include the best of the city's post-war buildings that have been swept away for another generation of generic, overscale developments that could belong anywhere.  Often, we will have multiple views of the same subject.

These photographs would be of undoubted interest to local people, and the more discriminating tourist, as well as anyone currently looking into their own personal heritage, with ancestors who once lived in Canterbury.  To this end, we have decided to open up the archive to the public, and allow people to purchase images.

Images can be supplied, either as digital scans on photographic paper, or as digital scans saved to CDR. The original pictures will be approx 8" by 6", unless stated otherwise.

The costs will be £7.50 per printed image, or £5.00 per image saved to disc. These prices include all materials used and UK postage. Discounts allowed for multiple images.

The quality of the images varies, but a high proportion will be to professional standard.  And many will be extremely rare, if not unique.

Therefore, if you are interested in any particular street or building, please email us with details, including the decade, or decades, of interest to you .  All prints and discs will be despatched in reinforced envelopes: -

And finally, due to a severe shortage space, we are being forced to sell a vast collection of paper-wrapped, glass-plate negatives from a defunct Canterbury newspaper.  They are stored in wooden boxes and roughly date from the period 1948 to 1956.  There are literally thousands of them, and they feature every aspect of local newspaper coverage.  If you are interested in viewing the items, and/or making an offer, please e-mail us.
